Oatmeal, Yogurt and Lemon Juice
Oatmeal, yogurt and lemon juice are all mild skin lighteners and can be applied to the skin freely. Combine two tbsp. ground oatmeal, one tbsp. plain yogurt, one tsp. extra-virgin olive oil and two tsp. freshly squeezed lemon juice to form a thick paste. Allow the mixture to stand for one minute, or until slightly thickened. If the paste becomes too thick to spread, add a few drops of water and mix again. Apply the skin lightener to the affected areas of the body and allow the solution to dry for 20 to 30 minutes. Rinse clean with cool water, and pat the skin dry.
Gram Flour, Lemon and Cream
Gram flour, also known as chickpea flour, is used in many Indian cooking traditions, but is also believed to have beneficial properties for the skin. When combined with lemon and cream, it lightens and brightens and is also rumored to reduce puffiness and redness. Look for gram flour in Indian food stores or well-stocked supermarkets.
To make your own skin lightener, combine two tbsp. gram flour, ½ tsp. lemon juice, ½ tsp. heavy cream and a pinch of turmeric. Stir until a smooth consistency is achieved. Apply directly to the skin, and allow the mixture to remain for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water, dry thoroughly and follow with a light moisturizer for best results.
Cucumber and Potato Juice
Cucumber and potato juices are believed to lighten the skin when applied on a regular basis. In addition, they tighten and firm the skin and reduce under-eye circles. Although all evidence of these claims is anecdotal, it is certainly gentle enough to try without fear of damaging the skin.
Combine equal parts cucumber and potato juice. To obtain the juice, grate the vegetables separately and squeeze the juice from the resulting shreds. Refrigerate the mixture for 20 to 30 minutes, and then apply directly to the skin. Allow the skin lightening solution to remain for at least 15 minutes, or until dry, and then rinse with warm water. Follow with a moisturizer to tighten the skin.
Other Skin-Lightener Recipes
Numerous other skin-lightener recipes exist, but which ones are most effective is dependent upon the individual. Try combining equal parts orange juice and yogurt or lemon juice and honey. Apply to the skin, leave on for 15 minutes and then rinse clean. Any combination of purported skin-lightening ingredients including lemon juice, yogurt, oatmeal, gram flour, honey, cucumber, potato juice and orange juice can be used.
